Environmental Conservation Internship

Environmental Conservation Internship

Are you passionate about our environment and want to be part of the solution? The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy is a local nonprofit working to protect and enhance the ecological health of the Chautauqua region. With 17 nature preserves totaling over 700 acres, we are doing tangible work to conserve habitat and protect water quality in our county.

We are looking for talented go-getters who love a challenge and learning new skills. As an intern, you will gain valuable experience in the world of a typical environmental non-profit, while working to make a difference for the environment.

As a small 501(c)3 organization, we have the ability to be flexible, and seek interns who are, too.  We are looking for passionate individuals willing to use their resources and do what it takes to achieve our goals and be capacity builders, so our organization can expand our conservation efforts.

Become an intern with the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy! |

What you will gain:

-You will learn about the challenges and threats facing our waters and do real work to help protect them!
-You will learn the ins and outs of working at a small non-profit organization.
-You will hone your creative skills.
-You will gain environmental science fieldwork experience.
-You will gain general office and fundraising experience.

We’re looking for someone:

-who is responsible, creative, outgoing, hard-working, and self-motivated.
-with a biological or environmental science background (plant ID skills a plus, but not required).
-with a passion for conservation in our region.
-who is capable of tackling independent projects and seeing them through to completion.
-who is willing to do work in whatever areas it’s needed most, not just where it’s most fun.
-who is willing and able to trudge through mucky swamps on hot days and impenetrable thickets on cold ones.
-who is willing to use their personal computer and vehicle for work.

Duties will depend on availability and skills, but may include:

-Accompanying Conservationists on field visits.
-Conducting species inventories.
-Helping to conduct baseline inventories on CWC preserve properties.
-Helping to create management plans for CWC preserves.
-Researching and obtaining permits for Preserve work.
-Preserve stewardship and maintenance tasks.
-Attending events and manning the CWC booth.
-Pulling invasive species.
-Cutting and marking trails on CWC preserves.
-Installing signs on CWC preserve properties.
-Leading nature walks.
-An intern project.
-Various administrative tasks (mailings, data entry, drafting letters, answering phones, running errands, etc.).

The internship is flexible and can run for a semester, a summer, or ideally a full year.

This is an unpaid internship. CWC cannot provide housing or transportation.

This internship requires stair climbing, rigorous hiking for long periods of time in all kinds of weather, a driver’s license, and the ability to lift heavy objects.
