About the event
Join us for a Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) survey on Saturday, March 1st at 11:00 AM at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute (311 Curtis Street in Jamestown) and SUNY JCC (525 Falconer Street in Jamestown). No experience needed! We will provide on-site training for anyone who hasn't participated in a survey before.
HWA is an invasive aphid-like insect that is threatening the health of the eastern hemlock across the eastern United States, including in Chautauqua County. The most important thing we can do to save our hemlocks is to find HWA early. If we know where the infestations are, we can take protective action.
The best time to search for HWA is in winter months because, while they are overwintering, they are immobilized in small, cotton ball-like capsules at the base of each hemlock needle, making them easy to detect. The bugs are also inactive during the winter, so…
